A waterproof coop keeps rain off the nesting box, the roost area, and often the run beneath. The feature shows up as a treated roof panel, a rain cover over the wire run, or both on the same unit. Without it, bedding soaks through and birds have no dry ground inside the enclosure.
On these coops the waterproofing is built as a solid roof over the house section, sometimes described as UV proof, and a separate fabric or panel cover stretched over the run. Pull-out trays sit under the roost area so wet droppings can be removed without soaking the floor. Ramps and openings are positioned so water runs off rather than pooling at the entry.
A waterproof roof protects the area directly beneath it, not the whole yard around the coop. Run covers shield the wire section but leave the ground at the edges exposed to rain. In heavy or driving rain, water can still reach the interior through open vents and doorways.
Many waterproof models are mobile, with wheels and a handle so the coop can be moved to fresh ground. Sizes range from compact hen houses for a few birds to larger units with two nesting boxes and a ramp into the run. Colors include gray, black, brown, green, and red.
A roof over the house section keeps the nesting and roosting area dry. The wire run needs its own cover, which some coops include as a rain cover, to stay dry underneath.
A solid roof panel over the house, often UV proof, plus treated or covered surfaces on the run. Pull-out trays and raised floors keep bedding off wet ground.
The roof and cover handle rain and snow melt without soaking the interior. Ventilation openings still let some moisture in, so bedding should be checked and replaced as needed.
Many do, since a mobile coop can be moved off soggy ground. Wheeled models range from small hen houses to larger units with nesting boxes and a ramp.
