Tray placement and cleaning access

The pull-out tray sits beneath the roosting area, where droppings accumulate overnight. On wooden coops it slides out from the side or rear of the hen house, usually below the nesting box level. On mobile coops with an attached run, the tray is positioned so it can be removed without entering the run.

Tray depth and lip height determine how much waste they hold before emptying. A shallow tray needs more frequent clearing; a deeper tray with raised edges contains more without spilling. Some trays are flat sheets, others have a formed lip on all four sides.

Materials and fit across coop types

Trays are commonly metal or plastic. Metal trays slide on formed channels or wooden rails; plastic trays sit in a framed opening and lift out. The tray must match the coop footprint under the roost, so replacement fit depends on the coop model.

On coops with wheels, the tray often sits above the axle line and below the roost bar. On stationary wooden coops, the tray may be at floor level or raised on a shelf. In all cases the tray is separate from the nesting box, which has its own floor and bedding.

Colors for coops with pull-out trays include gray, brown, black, red, green, and khaki. The tray itself is usually unpainted metal or black plastic regardless of coop color.

Does a pull-out tray replace bedding in the coop?

No. The tray catches waste under the roost, but bedding is still used in the nesting box and sometimes on the coop floor. The tray reduces how often you replace floor bedding.

Can the tray be removed while chickens are inside?

On most coops the tray slides out from outside the hen house, so the flock stays inside. On some mobile coops the tray is accessed from the run side, which may require opening a panel.

What keeps the tray from sliding out on its own?

Trays typically rest in channels or on rails with a stop, or they have a latch or pin. A flat tray without a stop can shift when the coop is moved.

Is the tray under the nesting box too?

The tray is positioned under the roosting area, not the nesting box. Nesting boxes have their own floor and are cleaned separately.
