What an automatic coop door is

An automatic coop door is a motorized panel that opens and closes the coop entrance on its own. It runs on a light sensor, a timer, or both, and mounts over the existing door opening. The unit replaces the manual latch, not the coop wall.

Does the door need direct sunlight to work?

Solar-powered models need the panel in daylight to keep the battery charged. USB rechargeable and battery-powered units do not depend on sunlight. A timer or light sensor setting still controls when the door moves.

What stops the door from closing on a chicken?

Built-in safety sensors detect resistance at the opening and reverse or stop the panel. The anti-pinch function works the same way on the solar and battery models. The door re-tries the close cycle after the obstruction clears.

Can I set the door to open at a fixed time?

Timer mode opens and closes the door at set times regardless of light. Light sensor mode follows dawn and dusk instead. Dual-mode and triple-mode units let you pick either, or run both together.
