What the wheels do
Wheels turn a stationary poultry house into a movable one. The coop can be pulled to a new patch of grass without dismantling it. This lets the birds graze fresh ground and keeps one area from being stripped bare. The wheels are fixed to the frame, not added as a separate dolly. A handle or pull point is part of the structure on some units.
Movement is manual. The unit rolls on its own wheels when pulled. Some coops have wheels on one end and a lift point on the other. Others have wheels at all four corners. The run, if attached, moves with the house as one piece.
Frame and wheel construction
Frames are wooden or all-steel. Wooden coops use thickened panels and solid roofs. Steel frames appear on units with metal runs. Wheels are mounted to the base frame. Some models have a pull handle built into the frame. Roofs are waterproof or UV proof. Nesting boxes sit inside the house. Pull-out trays handle cleaning. Colors include gray, brown, black, red, green, and blue.
The wheeled base adds height. The house floor sits above the ground on the wheel frame. A ramp or step leads from the ground to the doorway. Some units combine wheels with an attached run; the run rolls along with the house.
Wheeled coop questions
Do I need to lift the coop to move it?
Some models have wheels at all four corners and roll when pulled. Others have wheels on one end and a lift point on the other. You tilt and pull those to move them.
Can the coop stay outside in rain?
Roofs are waterproof or UV proof on these units. The house interior stays dry. An attached run may have a cover or an open wire roof.
Are the wheels removable?
The wheels are mounted to the base frame. They are part of the structure, not a separate attachment. They stay on the coop.
Does a wheeled coop have nesting boxes?
Yes. These coops include nesting boxes inside the house. Some have one large box; others have two or more. The boxes sit in the enclosed area.
