A coop for 4-6 chickens provides a hen house with one or more nesting boxes and a roosting area sized for standard breeds. The run, when attached, adds outdoor space but does not replace the hen house footprint.
These coops are built as wooden hen houses, often with wheels or a handle for moving. Some have an all-metal frame with a metal run. Roofs are typically waterproof, and some have an opening or removable panel for access.
Nesting box count ranges from one to three. A slide-out or pull-out tray under the roost simplifies cleaning. A non-slip ramp connects the hen house to the run on raised coops.
Wheel size affects how easily the coop moves over grass or uneven ground. Larger wheels roll better; smaller wheels suit flat surfaces. Some coops have a handle or tow bar, others are pushed by the frame.
Coops in this size come in red, gray, black, brown, and khaki. The finish is paint or stain on wood, or powder-coated metal on framed coops.
One nesting box per four to five hens is typical, so one or two boxes serve a flock of 4-6. Some coops in this size include two or three boxes.
Coops with wheels and a handle are designed for one person to move on flat ground. Larger wooden coops with small wheels may need two people or a firm surface.
The run adds outdoor access but the hen house is the primary shelter. A run that is too small for the flock can lead to bare ground and stress.
Most have a waterproof roof, often sloped or hinged. An opening roof allows access to the hen house interior without removing the tray or nesting box lid.
